The earthquake of December the 23^rd 1972 was for many of us the beginning of a commitment to the Sandinista Front for National Liberation. After the successful insurrection of July 1979, we continued our support during the low-intensity war that the US government imposed on you until it devastated the country and caused the FSLN to lose the February 1990 elections.

Throughout this period - on the field and at your side, in Belgium and throughout the world - many “internationalists” committed themselves, some at the cost of their lives, to the defence of revolutionary Nicaragua. This is the time when your enemies the Contras shouted: "Be patriotic, kill an internationalist!” After the terrible hurricanes Joanna in 1987 and Mitch in 1998, we remained in solidarity with the wounded population through reconstruction projects in which we became involved.

We can only note that you have turned your back on the ideals of the 1979 revolution for which we had supported you in the past.We have supported your struggle to bring back to power the ideals of 1979. In November 2006, the election victory of the FSLN in a completely new context was for many of us the possible source of new hope. Our opinions on the policy implemented over the past 12 years have been diverse. But since April 2018, and the outbreak of the policy of terror against all those who oppose the unilateral decisions of the Presidency, we have been stunned. We no longer recognize the Nicaragua we knew, the one for which we have devoted time and energy and we do not understand the reasons for such a political turnaround.

We are writing to you today because we are outraged. We can only note that you have turned your back on the ideals of the 1979 revolution for which we had supported you in the past. How can a man who once embodied this popular force, who spent 7 years in Somozist prisons, and who carried within him the values of democracy, social justice and freedom, turn away from the people who are demanding them today?

Like many others, we had placed our trust in you. Now, how do you explain the reasons that lead you to follow in the footsteps of your former foe? How can we explain - when we hear the cries of those who denounce the violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms - that you, who were once so close to the people, do not seem to hear them?

Several hundreds of people have been murdered by armed gangs that are neither prosecuted nor stopped. Thousands of people - among them mainly young students - have been imprisoned, without any respect for constitutional guarantees and judicial procedures, on the charge of “terrorism”, for having expressed their disagreement with your policy.

Among them is a Belgian national, Amaya Coppens, daughter of one of our internationalist comrades, who, as we did, made a commitment to popular Nicaragua in the 1980s. The truth compels us to say that today we recognize her struggle as being similar to the one we were waging at the time against the dictatorship, the economic power of the big bosses and US imperialism.

In the name of this fight that we led together, we urge you to return to the ideals of Sandino, Rigoberto Lopez Perez and the FSLN of Carlos Fonseca. The essence and dignity of the revolution is reflected not only in its objectives, but also in its methods, which the history of revolutionary processes has repeatedly taught. With respect for your journey of struggle, in the name of the solidarity we had shown you with strength and vigour in the past, we make this solemn appeal to you to work towards an end to the crisis in accordance with respect for the rule of law as set out in the 1987 Constitution, human rights and fundamental freedoms.

In this context, on behalf of all that has united us and that we have reminded you above, we ask you to intervene to order the immediate release of our Belgian compatriot Amaya Coppens, as well as all other persons detained without any basis and without respect for defence procedures. We demand, for those who remain prosecuted, a fair and dignified trial, as well as legal proceedings for murderous gangs that have been operating with impunity for more than 9 months.

In the hope of being read, heard and understood, we send you, Mr. President, our concerned and vigilant greetings. We look forward to hearing from you.
