CADTM International Council | Day 3 | Strategic considerations and the political and economic situation in Europe

7 November 2024 by CADTM International , Maxime Perriot

The third and final day of the CADTM International Council was marked by strategic discussions on the future and a presentation of the political, economic and social context in Europe.

 In Europe: Economic crisis and rise of the far right

Éric Toussaint began his analysis by highlighting a number of realities:

  • The economic crisis hitting Germany and the UK in particular;
  • The rise of the far right, which has become the leading political force in several European countries such as France, the Netherlands, Hungary, Italy andAustria;
See: Eric Toussaint,Version 2.0: Europe is moving to the Right and far Right
  • As a result, the conditions under which refugees are received are becoming increasingly inhumane;
See:Emmanuelle Carton,The Pact on Migration and Asylum: another step forward for necropolitics in Europe
  • The presence of war on European territory since the Russian incursion into Ukraine, with the increase in defence budgets enriching the arms industry by the minute;
  • The explosion of debt in Europe, combined with lower taxes on large fortunes and the profits of large companies, particularly in the pharmaceutical and arms industries;
  • The violent return of austerity under the excuse of this explosion in debt.

He then reviewed the activities and prospects of CADTM Europe for 2024:

 CADTM International network: Perspectives for 2025 and 2026

Discussions then focused on the CADTM International network’s prospects for action in 2025 and 2026. The continuation of the struggle and the expansion of the network will involve a number of militant events :

  • The International Anti-Fascist Assembly in Porto Alegre, Brazil, from 15 to18 May 2025: see:https://www.antifas.org/call/;
  • Counter-COP 30 in Belém, Brazil, in November 2025 (10 to 21 November)
  • The World Social Forum in Benin in January 2026, in conjunction with the CADTM World Assembly and the CADTM Africa Assembly;
  • The Ecosocialist Meetings in Brussels (Belgium) in 2026.
