#GENZ212 youth, Thank you!

1 October 2025 by Jawad Moustakbal

“There are times when even the wildest dreams seem achievable, provided you dare to try.” Bernard Werber

Just a few days ago, no one could have imagined that this initiative by GENZ212 youth, launched by several hundred people on Discord, would cause such a political and social shockwave across Morocco. Neither the most optimistic nor the most pessimistic people, who thought that the youth were overwhelmed by consumption, despair, and fatalism. What is happening today with the #GENZ212 movement is simply unprecedented: a generation that is speaking out, inventing new rules for the struggle, and shaking up the country with their smartphones and creativity.

Thanks to you, young people of #GENZ212, social media has become a true public space. Whereas protest discourse was previously confined to small circles, today every message, every live stream, every post shakes up thousands of followers and unleashes clear, spontaneous, unmasked speech. In your hands, the digital world, which was a tool for entertainment and even futility for some, has become a means of mobilization and collective awareness.

Thanks to you, indifference has given way to the audacity of legitimate anger. Those who thought that young people were lost, trapped in despair and consumerist illusions, are now discovering that you are capable of transforming anger into action, derision into a political weapon, and demands into slogans in the streets. You have broken the isolation of individual and sectarian struggles and given everyone the certainty that they are no longer alone.

Thanks to you, new alliances are forming. The poor student, the exploited worker, the young woman rebelling against patriarchy, the repressed artist, the persecuted independent journalist... all of them relate to your demands. What was once scattered and fragmented is now united around a common refusal: contempt, social injustice, the hoarding of wealth by a minority.

Thanks to you, February 20th resonates once again. Some have tried to erase this page or reduce it to a complete “failure,” but you prove that nothing has been in vain: the seeds sown more than 14 years ago are now finding new ground to grow. You are the heirs to this experience, but you are also innovators, with your own forms: creative protests, digital campaigns, and a horizontal organization that allows everyone to express themselves.

Thanks to you, fear is receding. Through your positions, your critical videos, your bold slogans, you are breaking taboos and shifting “red lines.” You are giving courage to previous generations, exhausted by disappointment, so that they can regain hope and the strength to participate again.
Thanks to you, the concept of “citizen” is regaining its full meaning. You refuse to be mere passive subjects, docile consumers. You demand to be full participants in political life, capable of holding those in power to account, monitoring their decisions, and demanding that they must be accountable. You refuse to have your ambitions sacrificed for the benefit of an isolated economic and political elite.

Thanks to you, art is regaining its rebellious role. Songs, jokes, videos posted on Discord, graffiti on walls—all become innovative tools of protest that circumvent traditional censorship. Some thought that Moroccan creativity could only flourish abroad, but you are proving that it can be a weapon here and now, in the service of the people.

Thanks to you, Morocco is entering into dialogue with the world. Your struggles echo those of other young people who reject precariousness, social, economic, and environmental injustices, and corruption. By raising your demands, you are making the voice of the new Morocco heard, a voice that is proud of its roots but universal in its aspirations.

Thanks to you, social justice is back at the forefront. In a country where the gap between rich and poor is widening with each passing day; you are bringing this issue back at the heart of public debate. You are reminding us that housing, health, education, and decent work are not privileges, but rights.

Thanks to you, utopia is no longer a luxury. You dare to dream of a Morocco where everyone’s dignity is respected, where political decisions are not made behind closed doors by a parasitic and oppressive minority that has allied itself with our old and new colonizers, and even with zionism. You dare to say that this dream is not an illusion, but a necessity.

Thanks to you, a new page is being written in our history. A page that refuses to forget and resign itself, a page that speaks the language of your generation, but belongs to all people.
We, along with the generation that grew up within Attac/cadtm Morocco—which this year celebrates 25 years of striving for a different Morocco—are wholeheartedly committed to your cause. We are ready to dedicate all that we have learned from our experience, including both our successes and, more importantly, our mistakes, to support your struggle and our shared fight for a free, dignified, and socially just Morocco.

Please persevere, and let us all continue to dream, this spirit must not be extinguished, lest we once again miss our date with history.
