Let us act now - Internationalist Alternatives to EU Policies (in times of coronavirus), is a European meet organised by the Committee for the Abolition of Illegitimate Debt (CADTM) that will take place on September 22 and 23 in Brussels, with the support of the Citizens for Financial Justice and the Confederal Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL) which brings together left-wing members of the European Parliament.
This meeting aims to physically and virtually bring together dozens of activists from social movements and radical & internationalist left parties to discuss proposals to address European policies. We believe that it is important to gather activists to discuss the need to find alternatives to the current European policies and to find out ways to relaunch a political momentum of protest against these policies..
There is an urgent need for an alternative program to the European institutions that is immediately applicable and which opens the way towards a radically different society. To this end, we will discuss the ReCommonsEurope project which precisely aims at promoting debates for elaborating such a program. The project will publish, this year, the second part of its conclusions about the EU’s foreign policy which deals with the issues of foreign debt, free trade and investment agreements, the rights of migrants in the face of Fortress Europe, European militarist policy and the centuries-old plundering of the peoples of the South. The external policies of the EU are generating more and more inequalities. This is evident both in the conditions imposed on development aid, which turns out to be a Trojan horse for big European companies, and in the EU’s inhumane policy on asylum rights, as exemplified by the drama around the refugee camp at Moria in Lesbos, Greece.
On Wednesday, 23rd September morning the conference will be dedicated to the need to promote citizen debt audits throughout Europe. This debate will be based on the “Package of common demands” on debt and on the need for a real citizen control of finances at the European level. The main point to be discussed are the struggles in the sectors of public health and the housing rights.
In the same afternoon, the proposal for a Covid Tax at the European level will be presented. The aim of this tax is to make big companies and the rich pay in order to avoid popular classes paying for this crisis, as usual.
At the time of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is fundamental that the forces of the radical left and the social movements debate and act together for a new internationalism between the peoples of the North and the South.
