When Israel’s accomplices accustom us to a monstrous, heartless and inhuman world!

26 September 2024 by Yorgos Mitralias , Gideon Levy

Worse than Israel’s crimes is the fact that the entire so-called “civilized” world follows and comments on them as if they were just a video game. When, of course, it’s not celebrating them by arming the criminal. Or approving them by letting them go unpunished. And it has been doing so for decades. And live on our TV screens. Day after day, hour after hour. As if these daily massacres were a never-ending TV series, interspersed with commercials, that we can follow lying on our sofas, while we eat a pizza or sip a drink...

Almost a year ago, we wrote that one of the aims of Netanyahu and his acolytes was to accustom us “to a world that increasingly resembles a jungle, where only the law of the strongest reigns, and where the worst atrocities against the weakest are “permitted”!’. Today, after twelve months of atrocities and crimes that often surpass the imagination, we can say that the Zionist state is accustoming us to something much more serious: perversity, mass sadism and indiscriminate, unrestrained violence against civilians, which are tolerated, recognized and even accepted as “normal” behavior by those above! This bestializes not only those who commit these unspeakable crimes, but also all those who tolerate and encourage them, pretending not to see them…

We are faced here with a “phenomenon’ that has no historical precedent, that is totally new. For while there have been crimes in the past as serious or perhaps more serious than those committed by Israel today, there has never been the indifference and apathy, or even the tolerance and benevolence shown towards them by governments, decision-making centers, the media and even the majority of public opinion worldwide! So there’s no comparison with the reactions of the Nazis’ contemporaries to the crimes perpetrated by the Third Reich. Even if the majority of their reactions were motivated not by anti-fascism but by anti-German patriotism, the fact remains that, when they became known, the crimes of the Nazis were almost unanimously condemned, as indeed were those perpetrated later by the USA in Vietnam or France in Algeria.

But what about now? How does the so-called “international community” react to Israel’s serial crimes? In most cases, it reacts with deafening silence. Not a word. Its media and authorities prefer to say nothing. So, they deliberately talk about everything except the daily hecatomb in Palestine. There’s plenty of comment on tall tales, exasperation over the fate of Israeli hostages, and pity all day long for a victim of a news story, but no mention of the deaths of tens, hundreds and tens of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza and the Occupied Territories. Because obviously, some of the dead weigh far less than others... or nothing at all...

But there are also those who talk about it. Except that they do so in a very... bizarre way. In fact, they talk about it to say nothing. Like their Putinist colleagues who talk about Russia’s... “defensive” war being waged by Russia in Ukraine, they too abound in ‘analyses’ replete with highly learned ‘geostrategic’ considerations on the supposed deeper meaning of Israel’s operations (military and otherwise), but carefully avoid talking about the essential: the human victims and their executioners, the civilians, especially the women and children bombed and massacred by the tens of thousands. In short, they muddy the waters, so as to sow confusion and avoid naming either the criminal and his crimes, or his victims and their unspeakable suffering. Demonstrating unparalleled cynicism and amoralism, these “analysts” and other journalists and “experts” on commission are ushering in a new era: that of monstrous societies in which compassion, fraternity and solidarity between human beings are frowned upon, if not outlawed and criminalized. In short, totally inhuman societies doomed to disappear sooner or later in a paroxysm of blind violence...

That said, it remains to reflect on the present and future of the protagonists of this never-ending tragedy: the Israelis and their state. Let’s hear it, then, from the indomitable Israeli journalist and writer Gideon Levy, whose courageous stand against the tide saves the honor not only of the Jews, but of humanity as a whole. Here, then, is his latest and most terrible text, published a few days ago in the daily Haaretz. It asserts some basic and existential truths to his compatriots...

Israelis Must Ask Themselves if They’re Willing to Live in a Country That Lives on Blood

It Will Take Generations for Gaza To Recover, if It Even Can

by Gideon Levy

Israel is turning, with alarming speed, into a country that lives on blood. The daily crimes of the occupation are already less relevant. Over the past year, a new reality of mass killing and crimes of an entirely different scale has emerged. We are in a genocidal reality; the blood of tens of thousands of people has flowed.

This is the time that all Israelis should ask themselves if they are willing to live in a country that lives on blood. Just don’t say that there is no choice – of course there is – but first we must ask whether we are even prepared to live like this.

Are we, the Israelis, willing to live in the only country in the world whose existence is based on blood? The only vision that is widespread in Israel now is to live from one war to another war, from one bloodletting to the next, from massacre to massacre, with intervals spaced as widely as possible. No other vision is on the table. Hopeful people promise long intervals, while the right promises a permanent blood-soaked reality: war, mass killing, systematic violation of international law, a pariah state, repeating in an endless cycle.

The Palestinians will continue to be massacred, and Israelis will continue to close their eyes to it? Hard to believe. A time will come when more Israelis will open their eyes and recognize that their country subsists on blood. Without bloodshed, we are told, we have no existence – and we make our peace with this horrific statement.

We not only believe that such a country can exist forever, we are convinced that without the blood offering, it has no existence. Every three years, a bloodletting in Gaza, every four years, in Lebanon. In between, there is the West Bank, and, occasionally, a blood sortie to additional targets. There is no other country like it in the world.

Blood cannot be the country’s fuel. Just as no one would imagine driving a car that is powered by blood, no matter how cheap, it is difficult to imagine 10 million residents willing to live in a country that runs on blood. The war in Gaza is a watershed. Is this how we will continue?

The media tries to sell us that this is a necessity. Through campaigns that demonize and dehumanize the Palestinians, a unified and monstrous chorus of commentators is successfully selling us the idea that we can live for eternity on blood. “We will mow the grass” in Gaza every two years – we will execute generation after generation of young regime opponents, imprison tens of thousands of people in concentration camps, we will expel, cull, expropriate and, of course, kill, and that is how we will live: in the country of blood.

We have already killed the Palestinian people. We began with the mass killing in Gaza, and now we have turned to the West Bank. Blood will be shed in gallons there too, if no one stops the battalion. The killing is both physical and emotional. Nothing is left of Gaza now.

The detainees, the orphans, the traumatized, the homeless, will never return to what they were. The dead certainly will not. It will take generations for Gaza to recover, if it even can. This is genocide, even if it does not meet the legal definition. A country cannot live on such an ideology, certainly not when it intends to continue doing so.

Let’s assume the world continues to allow it. The question is whether we, the Israelis, are willing to allow it. How long we can live with the knowledge that our existence depends on blood. When will we ask whether there genuinely is no alternative to a country of blood? After all, there is no other country like this.

Israel has never seriously tried another way. It was programmed and directed to behave as a country that lives off blood, even more so after 7 October. As if that terrible day, after which everything is permissible, sealed its fate as a country of blood.

The fact is that no other possibility has been raised for discussion. But a country of blood is not an option, just as a blood-fueled car is not an option. When we realize this, we will begin looking for the alternatives, if only for lack of any other option. They are there, and they are waiting for a test drive. They may surprise us, but in the present reality, it is impossible even to suggest them.
