Solidarity campaign on social networks and call for signatures

Where is Zinaba? Where are the abducted Burkina Faso activists?

18 March 2024 by CADTM International

For several months now, abductions of prominent figures defending democracy, violations of fundamental human rights and freedom of expression have been on the increase in Burkina-Faso. Civil society activists and political opponents in Burkina Faso have been abducted for no official reason and without any information being made available about the whereabouts and conditions of their detention.

Our comrade and friend Zinaba Rasmane, an organiser with Balai Citoyen, is among those who have disappeared. Zinaba was involved in numerous activities with international networks such as ATTAC and CADTM. In 2013-2014, he campaigned against the “dynasty” project that Blaise Compaoré wanted to initiate with his clan.

Other outspoken figures have also been abducted, including Badjo Bassirou, a Balai Citoyen activist and social affairs administrator at the General Directorate for National Solidarity and Humanitarian Assistance, and lawyer Guy Hervé Kam, national coordinator of the SENS (Servir Et Non Se Servir) movement, whose immediate release was ordered by the Administrative Court on 7 March.

Harouna Louré, a doctor specialising in anaesthesia and intensive care who co-founded the “Les Révoltés” movement in 2021, Ablassé Ouédraogo, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Daouda Diallo, founder and Secretary General of the Collective against Impunity and Stigmatisation of Communities in Burkina Faso (CISC), winner of the 2022 Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders, were released on 8 March after 3 months in prison.

In view of this extremely worrying situation, we strongly condemn these arbitrary arrests. We call for international solidarity in support of those unjustly abducted and for their immediate release.
