Important conference on illegitimate debt in Greece

10 May 2014 by Eric Toussaint

A public conference on Greek debt was held in Athens on 7 May 2014. This event was important because it brought together two people who are very active in Syriza, and two others who are very active in Antarsya.

These 4 people are among the original members of ELE, the Greek Debt Audit Campaign launched in May 2011 in Athens. The two people active within Syriza are Sofia Sakorafa (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sofia_Sakorafa), who is a Syriza MP (as a former PASOK MP, as of 2010 she expressed her opposition to the memorandum of understanding imposed by the Troïka and PASOK). She is currently running in the European elections to be held on 25 May, and has a good chance of being elected to the European Parliament (Syriza could win 5 to 7 seats). The second person is Georges Katrougalos (a jurist, see http://utopia.duth.gr/ gkatroug/katrougalos-en.html or http://www.cecl2.gr/index.php/en/thecentre/theboard/11-thecentre/cv/12-04-george-katrougalos ), also a Syriza candidate for the European elections, who may also be elected.

Léonidas Vatikiodis is one of the people active within Antarsya (see his blog: http://leonidasvatikiotis.wordpress.com/ in Greek ), a professor at the University of Cyprus, who played a significant role in the making of three important documentaries Debtocracy (2011), Catastroïka (2012), and Fascism Inc. (2014). The second, Spyros Marchetos (https://www.facebook.com/spyros.marchetos or http://www.theguardian.com/profile/spyros-marchetos ) is a professor at the University of Thessaloniki. He is active in the anti-fascist movement, in the movement to leave the eurozone, and in Greek debt cancellation activities.
Antarsya France publishes information on this movement: http://antarsyafrance.wordpress.com/ or https://www.facebook.com/antarsya.france

CADTM international has been working with the ELE, the Greek Debt Audit Campaign, since its creation in 2011. Over the past few years, Sofia Sakorafa, Leonidas Vatikiotis, Georges Katrougalos, and Spyros Marketos have participated in activities organised by or with the CADTM in Brussels, Brasilia, Madrid, London, Thessaloniki, and Athens. They are part of the ICAN network (see http://www.citizen-audit.net/).

It is a very good sign to see that Syriza and Antarsya activists are working together actively despite their political differences. Over one hundred people attended the conference held in the office of the Athens Bar Association on 7 May. Participants agreed on a final declaration.
